Ankur Choksi is a Principal at Studio Lotus, a New Delhi-based multidisciplinary design practice he co- founded with Ambrish Arora and Sidhartha Talwar in 2002. Spanning the domains of Masterplanning, Architecture & Interior Design, the work of the award-winning practice is grounded on the principles of Conscious Design — an approach that celebrates local resources, cultural influences, an inclusive process, and keen attention to detail.

Presently, Ankur leads the Integrated Architecture & Interior Design initiatives for the practice, with a focus on Hospitality & Residential Design. He is also an active proponent of quality design education, and advocates the principles of Conscious Design pan-India through academic engagement and design conclaves alike.

Treading Lightly | Resilience and Reversibility

Exploring climate resilience and reversibility in design can be an exciting challenge. When a building has been unoccupied or abandoned, do we consider its lifespan to have ended? What do we do with the materials - demolish the structure or reuse and repurpose the materials as well as the structure itself?

How do we design spaces that are reversible or recyclable at the end of their lifespan?

How temporal is spatial design?

We try to explore these ideas through "Light is Right" and think of ways to address the issues of the life and afterlife of materials in the design process. This theme tries to investigate avenues for low-impact, reversible interior designs—focusing on a design that can be assembled and disassembled at site with relative ease, with materials that are reusable or recyclable. While going through your design process, ask yourself—How is your design solution addressing the needs of our times and your context effectively?

With this outlook, the brief calls for designs that champion sustainability, material reuse and recycling, and lightness of impact on the listed sites according to the needs of the local communities. Is there an opportunity to powerfully influence the very idea and nature of these facilities in our present day context, the communities/user-groups, the builders and craftsmen who would engage in the process?


The sites listed here are colonial / world-war era airfields that are no longer in use. These brownfield sites now await development and are spread in locations throughout India. You have a unique opportunity to conceptualise your designs at these sites with the chosen programme and scale. Focus on low-impact, conscious, recyclable materials and design choices.

Programme | Design Intent (Interior Design):

Start with the assumption that any one of the four types of programmes listed below is to be instituted at your chosen site.

Participants are free to define the number of facilities, supporting functions, and ancillary activities they would like to include in their proposed schemes, and to conceptualise the interior spaces for the same—aligned to local conditions and context and the larger theme of the competition—the lightness of the footprint, reversibility of their designs, and the set of values that govern their chosen programmatic function.

The total floor coverage should not exceed 8,000 sq. ft

Create a framework for the personality of the facility in terms of its ethos, draw a vivid picture of the user group, map the journeys of their experiences, and devise a response in line with the ‘treading lightly’ theme. Design for the programme you can justify according to the theme and the premise. Focus on the material and design choices according to the theme as well as being appropriate to the context of the function, location, and the specifics of your site.


  • This typology could include functions such as:
    • 1. Research and educational facilities—laboratories, classrooms, lecture halls, studios, workshops, etc.
    • 2. Skill development facilities—workshops, lounge and relaxation areas, dormitories/residential areas, displays/shops, etc.
    • 3. Museums and supporting facilities—archives and repositories (to preserve and propagate cultural heritage), entrance lounge, souvenir shops, etc.
    • 4. Folk music schools—recording booths, studios, classrooms, etc.
    • 5. Linguistics facilities—libraries, classrooms, projector rooms, etc.
    • 6. Any supporting functions to serve these subtypes, such as—cafeterias, reading rooms, entrance lobbies, bathrooms and toilets, etc.

Healthcare and Well-being

  • These may encompass subtypes such as:
    • 1. Emergency hospitals, Long-term care, Clinics—operating rooms, patient general wards, emergency rooms, doctor’s offices, recreational areas for patients, waiting areas for attendants, conference rooms, hospital cafeteria, etc.
    • 2. Anganwadi
    • 3. Supporting functions like cafeterias, waiting lounges, attendant waiting rooms, washrooms, etc.

Climate Resilience and Disaster Relief

  • These may include:
    • 1. Research facilities—weather stations, offices, laboratories, sample storage areas, conference rooms, libraries, etc.
    • 2. Disaster education and awareness—classrooms, office areas, conference rooms, etc.
    • 3. Supporting functions for the above subtypes—cafeterias, dining halls, recreational areas, toilets, dormitories/hostels, etc.

Ecology and Anthropology

  • You may choose from:
    • 1. Research facilities—laboratories, classrooms, lecture halls, workshops, sample collection, storage and processing facilities, etc.
    • 2. Food and lodging for researchers—dining halls, canteens/cafeterias, recreational areas, dormitories/hostels, etc.
    • 3. Any other supporting functions that you can justify within the premise and the theme.


  1. Transparence 17.0 is open to undergraduate students of architecture and design. Recent graduates from 2022 are also eligible to participate
  2. Teams should comprise a maximum of three members. You are allowed to make teams with students from different batches or even different colleges.
  3. It is a two-stage competition:-
    1. First Stage: Regional Juries - in the North, South, East, and West zones each. Teams will be shortlisted by an online regional jury. The top two teams from each region would be invited to the Grand Finale to make a presentation before a selected panel of jurors.
    2. Second Stage: The Grand Finale. The shortlisted teams compete before the jurors.
  1. It is an ONLINE SUBMISSION. Plan your content to be viewed accordingly.
  2. A maximum of twelve A3 sheets are to be submitted (in landscape orientation), with a readable scale of the drawing and legible text. Please compile all your sheets into a single PDFof 20 MB maximum.
  3. Your name and identification should not appear on any of the sheets.
  4. Your PDF file should be named in the format abc_xyz, where abc is the participants’ first names, and xyz is the name(s) of the institution. In the case that abc is sending multiple entries, the subsequent files will be named as "abc1_xyz", "abc2_xyz", and so on. We will assign ID numbers to each submission to ensure anonymity.
  5. Restrict the word limit for your text per sheet to 100-150 words.
  6. DON’T FORGET to put the North arrow and a graphic scale on all your sheets
  7. Include a summarised area statement of your design with reference to the bylaws on no more than a single A4 sheet. Remember to briefly explain the context and rationale behind your choice of functions.
  8. Please include a scanned copy of your Student ID/college bonafide with your entry

  2. Concept and Evaluation of the Design.
  3. Addressing temporality through design and choice of materials, technology etc.
  4. Response to the site and context according to the theme of the competition-research into the need for a particular type of intervention.
  5. Bespokeness, reversibility, sustainability, climate resilience, and thought to create minimal impact on the site.
  6. Originality and innovation.
  7. Clarity and comprehensibility of the Design.
  8. Design delivery and presentation-appropriate graphics, the scale of drawings and visual communication with technical information.
